Portrait Of A Birder

For a project I’m looking for birders or bird photographers who would allow me to take their portrait. The intention of the project is to address a question. Why do people go out looking for birds? It seems like a simple question but I think the answer is different for everyone. With this project I’m looking to capture the people and their motivations behind their love for birds.

What does this look like?

If you are interested in participating you can send me an email (or fill out the form below) and we will set up a time and place. It can be anywhere, your home, backyard,  a park or your favourite birding spot. I’ll be using an old style film camera so setup takes a little bit of time/effort. I’ll take between 2-4 photos and it shouldn’t take more than 30/45 minutes. Wear whatever you’d normally be wearing when going out looking for birds. It might be nice to bring binoculars or the camera you use when birding.  I will also have some questions for you which you can either fill out online after or we can do it in person and I’ll set up a small recorder.

Why am I doing this?

When I moved to Canada from the Netherlands I myself started getting interested in birds. Back home I’d often get the question, why birds? My answer keeps evolving. But what I do know is that birders and bird photographers care about birds which in turn makes people around them care as well. This, I feel is important. This is a personal project where I’m spending my own time and resources to do the project. 

End result

I’m not sure yet what the end result will be but the least I can do is to provide you with some nice prints of your portraits. I’m hoping I can create a book or online publication which contains your portraits, interviews and perhaps landscapes of your favourite bird areas. If there is any profit they will go to a bird related charity.
